Objectives To evaluate the curative effect of acupuncture and moxibustion for treating carotid atherosclerosis.
Methods The randomized control trials (RCTs) of treating carotid atherosclerosis with acupuncture and moxibustion in CNKI, VIP, CBM, PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials with the deadline to October 15, 2014 were retrieved. The data was analyzed by using RevMan 5. 3 and statal 2. 0 software, and quality of evidence was evaluated by using GRADEpro.
Results A total of 8 studies with 637 patients were included, and the results of bias risk assessment showed that the quality of literatures was generally low. The results of Meta-analysis showed that the curative effect of acupuncture and moxibustionand comprehensive therapy of acupuncture and moxibustion in the improvement of IMT (MD=-0. 21, 95%Cl [-0. 33, -0. 08], P=0. 001), LDC-L (MD=-0. 21, 95%CI [-0. 31, -0. 11], P<0. 0001), PSV (MD=0. 14, 95%CI [0. 06, 0. 22], P=0. 0005), RI (MD=-0. 07, 95%CI [-0. 10, 0. 05], P<0. 00001) and EDV (MD=7. 76, 95%CI [5. 63, 9. 89], P<0. 00001) was better than that of conventional western medicine treatment. The result of evidence classification showed that the current evidence level was ’verylow-grade’ and ’low-grade’.
Conclusions Acupuncture and moxibustion might be an effective therapy for carotid atherosclerosis, which needs a number of higher quality evidences to support.
